I had high expectations for the AI detection feature… but I have no idea how we’re supposed to use it.
iA Writer는 사실 비교적 초기에 나온 글쓰기 앱이어서 컨셉이 좋지만 그 후에 나온 글쓰기 앱들에 비해서는 기능적으로는 많이 아쉽다고 느껴졌었습니다. 예전 6버전도 추가된 기능 자체는 좋은 기능이지만 사실 다른 글쓰기 앱에 많이들 있는 도구였습니다. 하지만 이번 iA Writer 7버전에서는 다른 글쓰기 앱에서 적어도 현재 이 글을 쓰는 시점까지는 보지 못한 특이한 기능을 추가했는데요, 바로 글을 이 앱에 붙여넣기하면 ChatGPT가 쓴 글인지 사람이 쓴 글인지를 분간해준다는 것입니다! 사실 AI가 쓴 글인지 파악하는 도구는 이미 존재합니다만 아무래도 챗GPT가 보통이 아닌 친구여서 판별률이 그렇게 높지는 않다고 들었습니다. 과연 iA Writer 7은 얼만큼 잘 인식할까요? 직접 확인해봤습니다.

How well can iA Writer 7 recognize AI? I tried it out myself!
Actually, up until this point, I had really high expectations, but…
I’ve been actively using ChatGPT lately when translating blog posts. So, I’ve been directly translating blog posts and putting some of the content into iA Writer to see if it can distinguish whether the text was written by AI or by me. In truth, having a larger sample size would be better, so it’s hard for me to claim that a simple few paragraphs would result in accurate discrimination. 위 공식 홈페이지를 참고해보면 일단 AI가 쓴 글은 다른 데서 붙여넣기를 했어도 인식을 한다고 합니다. 저는 그래서 다소 편의상 제가 사용하는 다른 글쓰기 앱으로 내용을 복사했다가 붙여넣기를 하면서 진행하고자 합니다. 한편 우리의 한글은 인터넷 세상에서 언제나 소외되는 편이므로 ‘한글 / 영어’의 경우를 나눠서 테스트를 해봤습니다. 제가 블로그 번역으로 사용하는 WPML 플러그인이 마치 실제 번역 프로그램처럼 각 문단을 문장별로 쪼개진 상태에서 번역하는 형태여서 어쩔 수 없이 연관성이 없는 문장들을 나열하게 되었는데, 혹시 문장은 인식하지 못하고 문단만 인식한다… 이런 것은 아니리라고 믿습니다.

I got excited and tested it with various scenarios that I could think of.
At first, I had considered several scenarios like the following:
- The sentence translated by ChatGPT, plus a genuine translation of the entire paragraph.
- The sentence translated by DeepL (translator).
- The sentence I translated myself.
- Paste the sentence translated by ChatGPT directly.
- The sentence translated by ChatGPT (Korean).
- Paste the sentences translated by Google Translate and Bing AI.
I thought that by considering various scenarios like this and comparing the results for each case, it would be a helpful article. However, based on the description, it seemed like the outcome should clearly indicate whether the pasted text was written by me or adjusted by AI, in addition to my own writing, but the results didn’t reflect that at all. The results were just similar to simply pasting ordinary text… At first, I thought it was impressive because there were various colors and strikethroughs, but it turned out that it was just highlighting and style checking, not using the AI detection feature. So, I did some internet research and found that it’s mentioned that you need to set it as ‘Paste with AI’ when pasting, in order to use the AI paste feature.
So, I followed that method, but all the text just turned gray… By the way, it’s mentioned that text written by AI appears in gray. However, I couldn’t take screenshots, but besides those 6 examples, there were also sentences I translated myself and parts I directly copied from ChatGPT conversations. Seeing everything just turning gray, I’m not sure if this feature is working properly. If I had only written in Korean, one might think it’s a problem with Korean text. But as you can see, I’ve also written a lot in English…
I guess I expected too much from iA Writer 7 after all.
To be honest, I’m not even sure how to use this feature. Surely they don’t mean to do it manually, do they?
Instead, the style checking and syntax highlighting features stand out.
To be honest, I was quite disappointed. I believe it’s not really meant to be used manually. In the app’s settings, there’s an option to set the ‘Editor’, where you can choose between the ‘Default’ editor and the ‘AI’ editor. When I set the editor for pasting to AI, similar to the screenshot above, all my text turned gray. And when I typed a few characters there, that part appeared in black again… I really hope it’s not just a feature designed to distinguish between AI and human, but rather one that actually detects AI. Otherwise, I’m really, really disappointed. Even if someone really wants that distinction, such a feature is not unique to this app at all, so there’s no need to use this app just for that… Well, then again, you might still want this feature even while using this app.
Instead, the syntax highlighting and style checking features seemed quite useful and stood out to me. While style checking is a feature found in some writing apps, so I’ll just go along with it, syntax highlighting significantly improves readability and is a feature not commonly found in other apps, which I really liked. It’s a good app, no doubt… But why did they add this feature… That’s also proud… I really imagined that it would automatically distinguish from any article, iA Writer 7 friend… And in fact, it seems to have this feature to some extent, but I decided not to use this version add-on.
