등위접속사에는 and, but, or, so, for, nor가 있습니다.
ex) I bought a shirt and sacks.

ex) She washed the dishes and dried them.
ex) I told him to leave, for I was very tired.
‘명령문, or~’는 ‘~해라, 그러지 않으면’의 의미로 ‘If not’, 혹은 ‘unless ,’처럼 쓸 수 있습니다.
ex) Wear your coat, or(=otherwise) you’ll be cold.
= If you don’t wear your coat, you’ll be cold.

  1. Both A and B
ex) He is both a novelist and a poet.
  2. either A or B: A이거나 B이다
neither A nor B: A도 B도 ~이 아니다.
ex) He must either mad or drunk.
  3. not only(=not merely) A but (also) B = B as well as A: A뿐만 아니라 B도
ex) He not only teaches English but also writes many novels.

ex) That she’s still alive is a miracle.
My suggestion is (that) we dine out this evening. ->
I told him (that) he was wrong. ->
ex) That he bought a new car isn’t true.
What I don’t understand is why he refused her offer. ->
  3. Whether와 if는 ‘…
ex) I wonder whether his decision is wise or not.
그리고 whether와 달리 if는 바로 뒤에 or not을 붙이지 않습니다.
ex) If the report is true is questionable.
There remains the question if she knew the secret.
  5. that과 whether/if의 차이점은 일단 that절은 항상 사실만을 나타낸다는 것과 whether/if절은 의문을 나타낸다는 것입니다.
ex) I don’t doubt that he will help us.
I doubt whether/if he will help us.

    since는 ‘~한 이래로’를
    until(till)은 ‘~할 때까지’를
    before와 after는 ‘~하기 전/후’를
every time / each time은 ‘~할 때마다’를 나타냅니다.
ex) When the movie is over, I’m going straight home.

Please turn out the light so (that) I can sleep.
  5. 부정 목적을 나타낼 때에는 lest ~ (should), for fear ~(that) should 등을 사용하며, 긍정의 목적을 이용하여 부정의 목적을 나타낼 때는 so that ~ may not, in order that ~ may not 등을 사용합니다.
ex) Take care lest you should catch a cold.
= take care so that you may not catch a cold.

= take care so as not to catch a cold.
= take care in order not to catch a cold.

  1. 결과를 나타낼 때는 so + 형용사 / 부사 + that~, such + (부정관사) + 형용사 + 명사 that ~을 주로 사용하며, so that~이나, such that~(=so great that)을 사용하기도 합니다.
ex) It was so hot that I couldn’t sleep.
She got such a nice present that she was beside herself.
  2. 조건을 나타낼 때는 if, unless(만일 ~하지 않으면), once(일단 ~하면), so(as) long as(~하는 한) 등이 사용되며, in case(만약 ~할 경우에)와, on condition that(~라는 조건으로)을 사용할 때도 있습니다. suppose, supposing, supposed, providing, provided 등도 if를 대신하여 사용됩니다.
ex) There will be a serious water shortage unless we get rain soon.
Any book will do so long as it is interesting.
Supposing he came back and found us, what would he say?
  3. 양보는 ‘비록 ~이지만’의 뜻으로 though, although, even if, as 등이 사용되며, 이 경우에는 양보의 전치사로 사용되는 in the face of, in spite of, with all, for all, notwithstanding, despite 등과 구별해야 합니다. 또한 while, whereas, whether A or B 등도 양보를 나타낼 수 있습니다.
ex) Though she was angry, she listened to me patiently.
While I really don’t like art, I find his work impressive.
ex) Dark as it was, we were still able to see the sign.
