조동사

조동사

 · 조동사는 동사 앞에 붙어서 동사의 의미를 보다 더 명확하게 해주는 품사입니다. 조동사는 항상 뒤에 동사원형이 나오고, 두 개의 조동사를 동시에 쓸 수는 없습니다.

1. 조동사의 추측

 1) may R : …인 것 같다.
     have p.p : … 였던 것 같다.

 2) can’t R : …일리가 없다
     have p.p : … 였을 리가 없다.

 3) must R : …임에 틀림없다
     have p.p : …였음에 틀림없다.

 * it may be that 절 : 아마도 …일 것이다.
 * would : 과거의 막연한 추측
 * ought to : 단정적 추측(반드시 …다)

 * You needn’t have done the work은 ‘할 필요가 없는데 했다’는 의미이지만 you didn’t need to do the work은 ‘할 필요가 없어서 실제로 안했다’는 의미와 ‘할 필요가 없는데 했다’를 모두 나타냅니다.

 * could / might / would + have + 과거분사는 과거 사실에 반대되는 가정법 과거완료로 실제로는 그렇지 않았음을 나타내거나, 혹은 과거 사실에 대한 추측을 나타냅니다.

2. would

 1) 과거의 불규칙적 습관 : S + would + 빈도부사(always 제외) -> …하곤 했다

 2) 과거의 강한 거절, 고집 : S + wouldn’t + R -> …하려하지 않았다.
  * will not + R : 현재의 강한 거절, 고집
   ex) The worst fool in the world is the one who will admit nothing that he can’t see, hear, or feel.

 3) 소망 표시(=wish to v)
  ex) He who would search for peals must dive deep.

 4) 과거의 막연한 추측 : 아마도 ~이었을 것이다
  ex) He would be about sixty when he passed away.

 5) 정중한 요구 / 부탁(의문문)
  ex) would you please / kindly ~?

3. should

 1) shall의 과거형으로 도덕적 의무, 추측, 가정법 등에 사용됩니다.

 2) 주관적 판단 : It is 형용사 that ~ should …
주로 이성적, 감성적 판단의 형용사를 주로 사용합니다. surprising, strange, curious, regrettable, necessary, important, natural, right 등
  ex) It is natural that she should get angry.

 3) 의외성, 놀람 : 의문사 + should ~?
  ex) Who should come in but the teacher himself?

  * s + insist, urge, suggest, propose, move(제의하다), demand, require, request, ask, recommend, order, advise, desire, be essential, imperative + that ~ (should) + R
   ex) The law I am referring to requires that everyone who owns a car have accident insurance.
   여기서 저 동사들이 수동태나 명사가 되거나, 혹은 형용사형이 되어도 (should) + R을 사용합니다.

4. Need, Dare, Used to : Need와 dare은 본동사로 쓰일 때는 뒤에 to부정사가 나오고, 부정문과 의문문에서는 조동사로 쓰여서 뒤에 동사원형이 나옵니다.

 ex) You need not go there.

  * Used to
   1) S + used to + R : 과거의 반복적인 동작(…하곤 했었다.)
   2) S + be used to + R : use의 수동형 + to부정사 부사적 용법입니다.(…하기 위해 사용되다.)
   3) S + be(get) used/accustomed to + ~ing(명사) : …하는데 익숙해져있다.

5. May

 1) 허가(…해도 좋다)
  ex) You may wait in my office but you may not smoke.

 2) 추측(희박한 가능성)
  ex) Jane may be at home. 제인이 집에 있을지도 모른다.

 3) 기원
  ex) May he rest in piece! 고이 잠드소서

 4) 완곡한 표현의 might(현재로 사용) -> 원래는 가정법입니다.
  ex) It might be all right for her, but it isn’t for me. 그녀는 괜찮을지 모르지만 나는 그렇지 않다.

 5) 관용적 표현
  · may well : …하는 것은 당연하다
  · may as well : …하는 것이 좋겠다.
  · may as well A as B : B하는 것보다 A하는 것이 낫다.

6. can

 1) 능력
  ex) He can stand on his hands -> 물구나무서기…

 2) can과 be able to : can의 미래, 완료형에 be able to를 씁니다.
  ex) We have been unable to trave his address

 3) 추측, 이론상의 가능성 : 의문문이나 부정문에서 주로 사용합니다.
  · can it be true? 그것이 도대체 사실일까?
  · English can’t be as hard as you think : 영어가 네가 생각하는 것처럼 어렵진 않다.

 4) 허가
  · You can watch television now.

 5) 관용적 표현
  · can not but + R : ~하지 않을 수 없다.  
   (= can not help + ~ing, can’t help / choose but R)
  · can not ~ too + 형용사/부사 : 아무리 ~해도 지나치지 않다
  · can not(never) A without B : A하면 반드시 B한다
  · I can’t help it : 어쩔 수 없다(= it can’t be helped)
  · You can’t miss it = you will never miss it
  · It couldn’t be better : 더 할 나위없이 좋다
   (과거형은 It couldn’t have been better)

7. Will

 1) 현재의 습성, 경향
  ex) Money will come and go.

 2) 고집, 의지
  ex) I will go no matter what you say -> 긍정, 반드시 …하겠다.
  ex) The door won’t open. -> 부정, 아무리해도 ~하지 않는다.

 3) 확실한 추측
  ex) That will be Mary on the phone. 전화를 건 사람은 메리일거야.

8. Must

 1) 필요, 의무, 명령 : Have to는 must의 미래, 과거형입니다. have got to는 고어적 표현으로 got이 있어도 의미는 같습니다.
  ex) I had to write a reply to him.

 2) 강한 추측 : ~임에 틀림없다.
  ex) She must be still in her twenties.

  * ought to
   1) 판단, 당연 : ~해야 한다(=should), must보다 약하고 should와 비슷합니다.
   2) 부정형은 ought not to입니다.

9. had better , would rather

1) had better : 말하는 사람의 충고를 나타내어 ‘~하는 것이 좋겠다.’의 의미를 갖습니다.
  ex) You had better go home.

 2) would rather(=would as soon, would sooner) : 오히려 ~하겠다(prefer to)
  ex) I would rather not accept it.

 3) 부정형은 better / rather 뒤에 not을 씁니다.
